How Does Acupuncture Work?!

Acupuncture needles hands

Acupuncture is becoming more and more mainstream with most people having at least heard of the practice and ACC covering acupuncture treatments with registered providers. We all know that it involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body, and those who have had it can (and often do) attest to the benefits, but you might be left wondering...

How exactly does it work?

There are a number of explanations for this but most fall into two camps: the traditional Chinese explanation; and the western scientific model.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the needles access networks of energy that run through and regulate your body and all of it’s daily processes and functions. These points adjust this energy flow to make sure everything is running smoothly.

In a western scientific model, the needles set off chain reactions in the body that stimulate the release of hormones and other natural chemicals. These chemicals then bring about effects such as healing, pain relief, and relaxation.

Is acupuncture right for you?

This depends. Acupuncture is a great way to speed the recovery of injuries and pain conditions, is effective with headaches and migraines, trouble sleeping, stress, and even pregnancy side effects such as nausea and dizziness. It is a gentle, drug free alternative to managing a number of tricky conditions such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and Crohn's disease.
